A BACKYARD in NOWHERE

There has been a few pike fly fishing videos lately and to be honest most of them are fantastic the last 2 great works have been the musky country did from brad bohen and the lair of the water wolf by Barry Reynolds which set the benchmark for fishing videos

Then we have this DVD from some crazy guys from Denmark who head to the wilds of Alaska in search of pike on the fly. from the start you know this video is something different something that in the back of your mind you knew you wanted to see but you didn’t realise what it was until you saw it, this is that thing, it’s a pike fuelled shot in the arm done in a movie documentary style, in fact imagine the blair witch project with tarentino as the director and your nearly there and it all becomes clear why we do what we do

The one thing that sets this off from other DVDs and takes things to a whole new level is the absolutely stunning slow motion footage of pike hitting flies and going airborne this is really some of the best footage I’ve seen they really got it spot on.

Along with the stunning fishing there is a some great scenes with the local Indians who seem to be permanently drunk, the interaction with the fishers and the Indians is worthy of its own movie alone, but I won’t spoil it for you as to what goes on but I was actually laughing out loud while watching it, the only thing I can say is remind me never to get baptized in Alaska

This is not a how to pike fly fish or a look at me and my big fish type of film oh no it’s a whole new way of creating an entertaing movie for the fly fisher and it does have everything including some rather disturbing footage of a run in with a guide company who work out of there ( I was shocked at the way these people behaved

but it does make very interesting viewing , I think if there was a downside to this dvd it would be the length , at just under an hour I wish they had stretched it out to an hour and a half , they were up there for 3 weeks so they must have a lot of footage maybe just maybe there will be backyard pt 2 coming out I really hope so because this has me gagging for a sequel , the dvd extra is a really bizarre music video with the fellas dancing in a boat somewhere now I wasn’t sure what was going on to be honest and then the fly rods appeared and it all became clear

EVENT RULES

Here are the event rules please read and understand before entering the event.

This is a fly fishing only event

A minimum 9wt rod to used.

All anglers to have the correct unhooking gear for pike

All anglers to use a keep sack were needed.

A suitable pike landing net must be used

All fish to be returned to the water quickly after weighing.

Fish to be weighed and witnessed by another angler your weigh card must be signed by them.

Fishing from 9.30am-4.00pm any fish caught after this time will not be counted.

You are advised to wear eye protection at all times

Take care when out on the river you are responsible for your own safety whilst fishing this event.

The organisers decision is final.

The event is being organised by the Broads Angling Strategy Group, and is being held to raise awareness of the decline in standards of Broadland pike fishing. Money raised on the day will be used to produce a dvd about the subject. The event is being sponsored by the Environment agency.
There will be guest speakers on the day including Neville Fickling, Eddie Turner, Graham Boothe and Bill Palmer among many others, and there will be a fine array of well-known tackle stands so there is plenty to see for everyone, not just flyanglers!

Entrance to the event is set at a very reasonable five pounds, with under-sixteens going free. With all money raised going to a cause that we can ALL benefit from then how can you complain? Please come and lend your support and help to reverse the current downward trends in pike fishing on the Broads; lessons learned here will help improve pike angling all over the British Isles. It's our future we're talking about!

......there will be a Pikesaber up for grabs along with a bulk bag of "fluff and stuff" as separate prizes included in the grand raffle along with all the other goodies. the need for a great reliable glue when epoxy is not being used on eyes usually boils down to using a super glue most of the time or if your really posh zap a gap , these glues like zap a gap are expensive especially in the UK where you can pay up to 5 quid for a small tube of the stuff , don't get me wrong its great stuff but id be bankrupt with the amount i tie and the serious amount of eyes i stick on

so it was with a raised eyebrow i looked at this big tube of croc glue that appeared on my doorstep courtesy of nick at deer creek i could hardly believe my eyes £3.39 for a big tube of waterproof flexible glue with a very easy to use applicator surly this cant be true

well I've been using it today and tied up half a dozen flies using various material , synthetic materials , deer hair , ep fibre and made all manner and size of fish predator snaxs and i must say so far I'm well impressed , I'm not very good with sizes but what i can say from looking at it , it seems to be at least 4 times the size of zap a gap and for pretty much the same money

the eyes i stuck on with it were still adjustable after 5 Min's but as with all my ties ill leave them over night to fully cure but great product and will now be a firm and regular feature on my desk

there wasn't a shortage of flies that's for sure

Dave Lindsay gets one on a classic colour when all else fails and the going gets tough this is the money in the bank fly

biggest of the day came to Stevie slight a good catch on a hard day

AL mabon and martin bailey head for a coffee , AL mabon is a regular on most Scottish days out with the club

Stevie slight and Eddie scmidt make it back to harbour a bit windswept but having enjoyed the day . although nothing massive was caught the conditions were far from ideal but never the less a great day was had by all , venachar has recently received some new management who it has to be said are very pike friendly and have a great vision for the loch and it future as a fishery and we at the pffa wish them the best of luck , it has to be said that they pushed to boat out for us arranging for there cook to be at the venue for 8am so we could all have a cooked breakfast and let me tell you its was well worth the money and i couldn't even finish it now that's something ......

Whiting Farms is experiencing an unprecedented onslaught of orders for our EuroHackle saddles. This is not just from the fashion world, but largely from the fly fishing pro shops that have new customers coming to them to buy our dry fly saddles for use in various fashion modes; hair weaves, ear rings, jewelry and crafts. This new traffic and business is welcome by the pro shops but we are faced with a real dilemma: orders vastly exceed supply! Understandably the shops that have put in orders to Whiting Farms, of any quantity, and are very keen to get them filled. But the number of saddles being ordered simply doesn’t exist. Therefore we have been intensely pondering how we can most equitably allocate what saddles we do have coming to harvest in 2011.

The only fair way, I feel, is to divide and conquer. By this I mean we are going to disassemble our EuroHackle saddles and repackage them in a new product line called the “Whiting Fashion Pack”. Sixteen long feathers of a single color will be affixed on our branded board, very much like our Whiting 100 Packs, but not sized as to hook size. The suggested retail price will be $20.00 [...] Most of the customers wanting these fashion feathers are wanting to experiment and so the smaller quantities will be welcome and more appropriate. The lower price point will encourage them to possibly buy a range of colors or several packs. A full or even half EuroHackle saddle is usually too many feathers of only one color for any hobbyist anyway.

In order to do this more fair allocation of our limited EuroHackle saddles we will have to cease selling full or half saddles as a product line. We are making an extra effort to keep our flagship Whiting dry fly saddles, and the new High and Dry saddles, in good stock to supply all the fly tier’s needs.

Invasive shrimp found at Grafham Water

The gammarid shrimp, Dikerogammarus villosus, common name ‘killer shrimp’, has been found at Grafham Water, an Anglian Water reservoir in Cambridgeshire.

This is the first time the shrimp, which is classified as an invasive species, has been found in this country.

Two keen-eyed anglers spotted the unusual shrimp, which can be as small as 3mm, on Friday 3 September and sent samples to the Environment Agency for identification. Once the shrimp was identified as possibly being Dikerogammarus villosus, the Environment Agency worked quickly with Anglian Water to put precautionary biosecurity measures in place.

The shrimp has already colonised parts of Western Europe, affecting a range of native species such as freshwater invertebrates, particularly native shrimps and even very young fish, altering the ecology of the habitats it invades. Insects such as damselflies and water boatmen, common sights on British lakes and rivers, could be at risk, with knock-on effects on the species which feed on them.

An expert in Holland conclusively identified the species today (Thursday).

Defra Minister, Richard Benyon: ‘I am extremely concerned to hear that this highly invasive species has been found in Britain. Anglian Water has acted quickly to put biosecurity measures in place and the Environment Agency is working hard to establish the extent of the problem and what action may need to be taken. We need to do everything we can to protect our native wildlife and young fish from the potential damage the killer shrimp can cause.’

Dr Geoff Brighty from the Environment Agency said: ‘We are devastated that this shrimp has been found in Britain, and very grateful to the keen-eyed anglers who found it. We are currently establishing the degree of the problem, and whether the shrimp is only in Grafham Water or if it is in nearby lakes and the Great Ouse as well.’

Ciaran Nelson from Anglian Water said: ‘We have put precautionary biosecurity measures in place around Grafham Water as containing the shrimp is of paramount importance. We are also assisting with investigations to establish if it is already more widespread. Subject to these controls, recreational activities on the reservoir can continue.

‘We are asking all water users at Grafham to take the actions asked of them on-site. This includes checking their equipment for shrimp when they leave the water and removing any that they find. They should also ensure their equipment is thoroughly cleaned and dried before it is put into any other water.’

Expert biologists are currently testing water entering and leaving Grafham to see if the shrimp can be found in it. The results from this will indicate how widespread the problem might be and what measures need to be taken.

The shrimp could have arrived at Grafham in a variety of ways, including boating, angling, fish-stocking or naturally via birds.

thought this was quite interesting I've only ever seen 1 albino pike before so when this surfaced 1 thought an albino muskie is surely even more rare i mean the chances of any pure white fish serving in a water full of predators is quite amazing in itself let alone getting to this size

The musky Paul Parise boated on Oct. 6, 2010, from the lower Flambeau River in Rusk County is truly the rarest of the rare: a 51-inch albino musky.

"That is a pretty fantastic catch," says Tim Simonson, co-chair of the Department of Natural Resources musky committee. "Albino musky are pretty rare to begin with, and for one to survive to that size is pretty uncommon given they don't have the protective camouflage to hide from predators or sneak up on prey. This fish stood out from day one, but through luck and maybe some skill, it survived."

The fish is the second albino musky to surface in Wisconsin waters in recent years. In 2005, a DNR fisheries crew caught a white musky in their fyke nets during population surveys. But that fish was much smaller -- 32.7 inches long and 7.9 pounds at the time.

Albinism is a heredity condition in humans, other mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, in which there is a total or partial lack of pigment that gives color to the skin, hair and eyes.

The growth and development of an albino is the same as that of a normal individual. They also have the ability to reproduce offspring.

Potential IGFA record pike fly in more than 16 lb

The Milanese Paccarini Paolo , Member of the IGFA and creditor of 7 world records in different species and categories , won the June 19 Annone lake waters (Italy ), the capture of a colossal specimen of 16.33 kg pike weight (36 lb 0 oz ) , which if validated , achieved by 4 lb unseat the previous record in 1994 captured the Canadian Nejanilin Lake (Manitoba ) , weighing 14.51 kg (32 lb 0 oz ) for more than 16 lb tippet strength used.

The bait used was a self-built Wiggle Tail and the fight lasted for about 10 minutes.

In another vein , it is the least sad end of such a magnificent specimen , dead and badly portrayed in the interior of a house and hanging from a atrapapeces . Unfortunately, the validation of a record again takes the lives of an exceptional specimen

Had a few hours this morning before packing to go to Exmouth for the weekend, a wedding and some bass fishing.
I got down to the clubhouse having booked a boat, only to find the boats were all weatherbound. So I went back to the clubhouse, collected my refund and went to try from the bank, only I hadn't brought any waders because I was going out in the boat. The wind was fairly howling, sending spray flying off the building chop. The only place where there was any kind of shelter at all was down by the dam wall, so that was where I went. There were a few trout bashers there and trout were in evidence on the top.

I tried everything, but not a touch. I think they are all pretty well fed in the reservoir at this time of year, the trout were stuffed, absolutely to bursting, with tiny fry, an inch long. I think the pike feed on this rich source too as there have been 3 good pike taken in the last couple of weeks by trout anglers using fry patterns on size 10s.

I resorted to normal pike tactics, with an Orvis intermediate clear tip, 9-foot tapered saltwater leader finishing in a length of single strand stainless and a clip. Having seen some of the titanium stuff I shall be changing as soon as I can get an order placed. It is brilliant stuff and you simply cannot kink it, unlike my haywires, which work well, but they do kink and go out of shape if you catch anything, pike, tree, bush, snag, it doesn't matter. Until now I have always reasoned they were cheap enough and just put a new one. The titanium wil just enhance fishing pleasure so much through lack of aggravation.

Back to the day. I fished hard for several hours, walking right round the reservoir southern end, trying in all the likely and regular spots...not so much as a swirl other than by one decent trout which I missed on the 2/0 hook I had on at the time. When I got back to the dam corner the trout men were complaining about a pike mutilating their trout as they played them in...(to be said in a Black Country accent)"get out there and catch the damn thing and knock it on the head". I spent 5 minutes trying to persuade them that the last thing they should do is kill a big pike, etc etc.....it all fell on deaf ears. Their love is imported, farm bred rainbow trout, not native, wild, magnificent fish.

Anyway, I tried a small roach deceiver that I have tied with some polar bear fur for the belly...as I was stripping the line off, having just flipped out a rod length and a bit while I got the line ready....the great pike came charging in and swirled at my fly as I was just drawing it to cast for the first time!. It missed. I swore. The trout men cursed. I stripped a full load of line off and recast out about 10 yards out from the dam wall. On about my 6th or 7th cast everything went solid and the head shaking began....I didn't think it was a big fish, but then it woke up and powered away. I eventually landed this beauty:

This is my first pike out of Blithfield, having fished it quite a bit this year...it is not easy. On Wednesday I walked into 3 pike and had to poke them with the rod tip before they stirred into life and even then they didn't shoot off, just went away very slowly, just a few yards. They are all full up with fry. Anyway, I have finally opened my tally at Blithfield, not a bad start with a 21lber, makes the membership worthwhile I suppose

there has been a bit of a rumour on the net that the event this year has been cancelled , unfortunately this rumour has been started by an x member of the club who was thrown out for being a dick

I'm happy to say not only are we still having the flyer but the pffa as a club is still growing strong and we should have a bumper event and raise plenty of funds for this years chosen charity (peter will say more on the charity when its been confirmed ) we have sponsors on board already in the form of UK pike fly fishing crew pike trek

the event itself is always a great day with plenty of banter , plenty of prizes and plenty of great fishing water and the best thing we raise a lot of money for charity

well done to the lovely Mr scales on a 20lb UK river fish on the pikesaber fly rod

despite being a 20lb fish with a river behind it to fight with Davey got the fish in , in mear minutes again proving that if you know what to do with a fly rod and have a decent understanding of pike fly fishing you can get fish like this in very quickly

pike trek rattles

I've finally got round to testing out and tying some flies with piketreks new rattles what I've done in light of ken catching so many bloody large mouths on the surface a couple of weeks ago with the gurgler i decided to try and tie a few up with rattles

the big spit and rattle gurgler

hook - 4/0 orvis pike and musky hook

tail -green bucktail

foam - shaped glitter foam

rattle - piketrek rattle

body - piketrek spectrum twist

(optional rubber legs taken from rubber squid lures)

the gurgler rattle sandwich

the fly below is tied the same as the fly above except the is a foam strip also on the bottom of the gurgler and the spectrum twist is green

piketrek have come up with a great design for a pike sized rattle at a fraction of the cost of the glass rattles that are out there

the rattles are made of plastic which I'm sure you ll be aware off is much more tooth proof than glass ones , they come in at 21mm and cost an amazing £2.50 for 25 that is an astounding price when you consider that you only get around 5 glass ones for that price

now i know what your going to say here hang on the glass ones will rattle more than plastic surely , well no i was surprised when i shook the glass one at the same time as the plastic one the glass ones had a bit more metallic sound where the plastic had a more deeper metallic sound to it.

i have had a fiddle around with these and i found a few ways of securing them to the hook

1 - basically glue and whip it to the hook shank

2 - heat the hook shank slightly and stick it on (you'll still need to whip it though to secure properly)

3 - there is a lip on the rattles so if you tie a few wraps of 6 lb line around the lip then whip the line onto the hook shank and the rattle hangs off the back

4 - place the rattle inside Mylar tubing and secure to hook shank (my favorite)

so get yourself over and get some before they all sell out

pike fly fishing association

(lake of menteith 2010)

so it comes around very quickly the annual 2 evening event on the lake of menteith Scotland's premier trout fishery with a few crocs swimming about as always it was great to meet up with old Friends and say hello to some new guys like Andy cheetham below

another fine fish comes to Andy and Robbie's boat the guys had a fantastic 2nd night catching most of the larger doubles of the event

tony "golden balls" harkin enjoying a calm moment before the cold wind whipped up

and there off view of the lodge at the off myself and tony had our skates on

above the pikesaber getting some welly on the lake this rod has some backbone and a few of the guys tried it out before the off and liked it to the extent that a few orders will be put in

the lakes big girls alluded me but i still managed some small jacks which are still good fun , but I've never been one for the big fish circit I'm Happy just catching them on a fluff

this wasn't the size of one of the piketrek lads lost pike it was in fact the size of the breakfast they had in callander

Robbie Milne's boat was the dream boat well done to him and Andy

in total the club caught

82 fish the biggest being 19lbs

another great pffa event , although the figures were slightly down on previous years it was still a great couple of evenings

you know sometimes in life you get a real surprise and this rod is one of those times in fact id go so far as to say its a moment that ill never forget when i opened up the black tube to reveal a 4 piece rod that has shaken the foundations of my pike fly fishing , at first i thought id been sent a trout reservoir rod i mean surely such a low cost rod couldn't weigh just a few more grams than my sage xi2 and throw out a line and big fly like the xi2 does .

my first job due to the waters in Scotland being frozen was to get out in the park with a selection of lines and give it a bit of a thrashing without a fly on the end to get the feel of it well although its a 10wt i found my 9wt line cast very easily and comfortably and i got pretty much down to the backing . i was quite impressed.so onwards and upwards i tried my 10wt Rio striped bass line and hell not only did it get to the backing in only a couple of false casts you could feel the rod wanting to take more no i sat up and took notice that i had something very special in my hands .and it even casted my 20ft lead core leaders with no effort at all i was starting to get that tingling feeling ...

i had to try this on water with big flys after big fish so i headed south to old bury hill estate lakes in surrey i knew that this would be ice free and id be able to get a punt out on the water , so there we were in the middle of this lake casting the most enormous flies i had with me which were 13 inch musky sized flies and this rod absolutely demolished anything i could throw at it i had to marvel at feeling the load points on the cast with a 13 inch fly and watch in shear amazement as the 13 inch fly headed for the horizon with pretty much little effort on my part and it still wanted to take more i must admit to being seriously impressed

features on the rod include

Unique Aluminium Fighting Butt - it looks a but like the death star from star wars but it comes into great effect as when fighting fish (or in my case a fly stuck up a tree from the boat) the butt fits very comftabley into the palm of your hand andthere is a screw in the bottom that you can undo and place weight in to balance the rod if need be

30/40 ton Strengthened Carbon - oh boy is it strong , i managed to pull a punt with 2 anglers to the bank with the rod this rod will have no problem landing the biggest of fish in this country quickly and efficiently

High Grade Cork Handle - a quality cork handle makes all he difference in comfort although they still get dirty but to me theres nothing worse than a nice shinny handle

SIC Line Stripping Rings - no scrimping here either the rings and guides are quality

Unground Blank for extra Strength - does what its says it is strong your not going to explode this on a fish

Spiral Wrap to stop Line Stick - probably why the line just wants to keep going and going

Bag and Rod tube - no short cuts here either a quality bag a very strong tube ideal for the traveling angler , i traveled on the train from Edinburgh endured 2 rush hour tube journeys and it didn't even get a scrape or a dent

keeper ring - this is one thing that really annoys me you pay £600 quid for a sage and theres not a keeper ring for you fly same with a lot of high price rods no keeper ring this has a nice strong keeper ring at the top of the handle perfect

line up dots - how many times have you got the rod out and it takes ages to line all the rings up this the rod has small but easy to see small white dots so your up and ready in seconds .

so all in all this rod has been very well thought out by pike fly anglers and they have come up with probably the best pike fly rod on the market and a great price it really doesn't matter if your looking for an entry level rod or stepping up to the next level this rod will be the only rod you will ever need and at under 200 pounds UK this rod is far better than rods costing 4 times that much i really cannot fault it in anyway , if your a pike fly angler your really need to own one of these . may the force be with you ..5/5 dl
